dog with diarrhoea

My puppy has diarrhoea, should I be concerned?

In short- YES!

Diarrhoea is a sign of an unhappy gastrointestinal tract and is characterised by watery or loose bowel movements. It may have mucous or blood in it.

It’s a non-specific sign and can have many causes.

These include:

  • stress
  • viruses
  • bacteria
  • change of food or being fed an inappropriate food
  • food intolerance or allergy and parasites.

It can be mild and improve without much intervention but it can also be severe and if left even a short time can lead to dehydration which a puppy is particularly susceptible.

Advice from a veterinarian should always be sought and in severe cases emergency treatment and supportive therapy may be required.
